I’ve Decided to Become Diabetic

Type II diabetes runs in my family, and its very likely I’ll land the disease by around age forty-five. Occasionally I’ll quit eating sugar and sweets just to make sure I still can and to help shed a few pounds. The last time I did it with any real vindication, I was in college. I dropped two sizes in about thirty days and felt great. I haven’t been  serious about taking on a diabetic diet again since then – until now.

My childbearing is over, at least for a few years. My teaching career is on hold for a year. I’ve finally got a bit of time to exercise and focus on myself, so its time that I do.

I’m going cold turkey. I’m quitting sugar.

Now, since I’m not actually diabetic, I don’t plan on doing this for the next fifty years (until I actually have to.) I will cut out all sugars, excluding fruits and other healthy carbs, for at least the next two months. I hope to keep it up much longer, but I’ll have to cheat for my birthday in September. Toddlers love to help blow out birthday candles.

Unfortunately, I’ve become a serious carb addict, so this is something I’ll have to do one day at a time. Exercise will help since I don’t feel a need for sweet snacks when I’m feeling pumped and energized.

I’m cutting out sweets, jelly, white breads and anything that would kill my blood sugar if I were diabetic. I’ll consider it practice for the future and benefit from the weight loss my diabetic diet creates. Who knows, maybe I’ll lose the rest of this baby fat and then some by the time Brian is four months old.

Then, once the addiction is broken and I’m reveling in my new health, I’ll do what I should have been doing all along – eat sweets sparingly.

  2. Good luck! Please keep us posted on how it goes! I wish I had your drive, because my love affair with carbs is complicated :)

    P.S. I didn’t know you were a teacher!
