Real Mommies Get It

It’s Time to Resolve My Fat

So all my good intentions for this year have come to naught. I’ve not lost all that baby/stress weight, and I’m not sure what weight loss diet I’d need to perform such a miracle on the schedule I’m currently following. But I do have a resolution for my fat that is very much in tune with a form of a weight loss diet – I’m going to be diabetic.

I know, I know – I think I tried this before. But now I’m really going to do it.  It’s time now.

My father has Type 2 diabetes. So do both of my Aunts. I know that I can prevent it for quite some time if I can get my weight down, stop eating sugar and start exercising (again.) So here’s the plan:

I will (starting tomorrow) follow the same style of diet I’ll have to follow in about ten years. If I am even reasonably close to cutting out all the sugary crap in my diet, I’ll be in business – I’ll lose weight, I’ll feel better, I’ll be setting a better example for the kiddos and I’ll be preventing diabetes.

Finding time to work out will be the hardest part, but I can work it in when I can for the next few months and when summer rolls around again, I’ll join up (again) at the Y to utilize the childcare, awesome kiddie swimming pool and the elliptical machine.

It’s workable. I just need to do it long enough for it to become habit.

The Costume Hunt is On!

Dragon CostumeSpeaking of big babies, there is a serious challenge when it comes time for Halloween costumes. Baby costumes for infants are easy enough to arrange, but when your preschooler or toddler suddenly develops a preference for a costume, mothers of big boys like mine run into a spot of trouble.

Example:
Jake, my three year old who happens to wear a 4 or 5 in boys clothing, wants to be Handy Manny or Winnie the Pooh for Halloween. Now, if you’ve ever shopped for preschool boy costumes, you’ll notice that many of the cartoon characters appropriate for a three-year-old come in sizes 2T – 3T or 3T – 4T. In short, they are too short for my little man.

Tigger suitI’m not worried about my kid having his legs stick out the bottom (he’s not a fashion icon, anyway), but we tried on a 3T-4T Tigger suit from last year, and he almost had a panic attack when it got stuck over his arms and chest. He’s a big boy, and he needs a big costume. ApparSuperman costumeently this means he’ll have to be Captain Jack Sparrow, the Dark Spiderman, or the Hulk as those are the only costumes I can find in his size (XS Boys). For some that might not be a problem, but my kiddo has never even seen the movies and a drunken pirate is just no competition for a cool handyman he watches every day on Playhouse Disney.

Looks like this busy mom will be getting just a bit busier creating a toolbox for talking tools and finding a red trucker cap.

Incidentally, if we can find Jake a Pooh Costume, Brian (my one-year-old in 2T-3T clothing) will be Eeyore. If push comes to shove, he’ll just wear Jake’s old Superman costume. (Jake wanted to have a cape that year.)
